What is a UCSVTBMV?

It is the unit generated from the monetization of the application and verification of the BMV Standard in rural communities, valuating natural resources, in carbon equivalents, as well as the ecosystem protection and conservation services provided by the owners or inhabitants of rural properties.

What is the scope of the programme?

Types of Application of the Brasil Mata Viva Programmes and Projects:

·       Supply Chain - It can be designed for application in a specific production chain, for example the cellulose chain, meat chain, energy chain, mining chain, etc. Solutions are devised respecting the peculiarities of the relationships of individual players in the production chain. Usually the process would be led by an anchor company (project developer). In the case of the meat chain, by the meat packers, in mining, by the mining company and so forth.

·       Association of Rural Producers - The producers organise themselves into an association to lead the process and format the sustainability model according to their own vocations and begin the production units implementation process.

·       Investment Funds - Funds aiming to diversify and to invest in sustainability funds. The fund directs resources for the generation of credits, resulting in the implementation of production units where there is a guaranteed return on invested capital, with attractive profitability also incremented through the trading of Sustainability Credit Units,

·       Governments - In a broader, more comprehensive manner, the state with organised segments of the rural sector in a joint action for the sustainable development of special interest regions.

Investors, clients, and colleagues can quickly follow a QR Code to learn all about the rural properties and the BMV Project where is located, its area, total native vegetation, area of influence, maps and so on;

·    Credibility - Guaranteed through the validation and verification by accreditation bodies that are internationally recognised for their credibility;

·    Sustainability - UCSVT BMV is a tool that turns environmental protection and preservation into an investment opportunity with attractive returns on invested capital and profitability;

·   Social Responsibility - Transforms companies from villains, creating negative impacts on the environment, to problem solvers and innovators with environmental solutions.

Does Brasil Mata Viva sell carbon credits?

No. The BMV Programme sells Sustainability Credit Units - UCSVT BMV.

What is sustainability?

Sustainability - Concept comprised of three pillars, subdivided into dimensions and aspects

1. Environmental

a. Environmental Sustainability  – Geographic conservation, ecosystem balance, fighting poverty and social exclusion, respect for human rights and social equality.

b. Ecological Sustainability – The use of natural resources in a manner aiming to minimize damage to the life support mechanisms: reduction of toxic residues and pollution, material and energy recycling, conservation, clean and more efficient Technologies and rules for environmental compliance;

c. Spatial Sustainability - balance between the rural and urban migrations, de-concentration of metropolis, adoption of more intelligent agricultural practices that are less harmful to health and to the environment, sustainable use of forests and decentralized industrialization.

2. Social

How do the UCSVTBMV work?

The generation process begins with the formation of an association of rural producers, who summons the community and local authorities for a Public Hearing to determine and legitimise the public interest nature of a Brasil Mata Viva Sustainability Credit Unit Generation Project.

Once the credit generation cycle is complete and a sale has been made, the resources are sent back to region where the BMV Programme will be implemented.

Is Brasil Mata Viva is a business enterprise?

No, the Brasil Mata Viva Programme is a set of standardized systems and processes, contemplated by the BMV Standard.

How does the Brasil Mata Viva Programme work?

BMV has a unique programme model, whereby its management system is guided by processes with a workflow that is defined in stages, involving different actors, with a staff of multidisciplinary expertise.

The systems that comprise the BMV Programme entail actions and activities that result in sustainable development, by integrating urban society, enterprises, institutions and rural communities.

Its scope is to promote sustainable development through the formation of associations of farmers who commit to a sustainable land use project, with elements of both food production and forest and natural resource protection.

What is PSA?

Payment for Environmental Services, PSA (an acronym for Pagamento por Serviços Ambientais), is an efficient way to encourage environmental conservation activities, since it combines preservation and income generation, particularly when applied in rural areas where, typically, the conservation of preserved areas is seen as a drawback by producers who have their production areas decreased as a result of the establishment of legal reserve and permanent preservation areas.

It is important to see standing forests under a new light, whereby they represent much more than simply wood for extraction and sale. Trees are also the source of the oxygen we breathe, they are carbon sinks, protect soil and water, and sustain biological diversity, all key to maintaining a balanced ecosystem.

All these "services" provided by forests must be taken into consideration. This means that we must transform the preservation of forests into something more financially attractive than exploitation. And that’s where Payment for Environmental Services, PSA, comes in.

Does the Brasil Mata Viva Programme undertake reforestation with native species?

Yes, in permanent protection areas (PPA) and legal reserves, reforestation is only carried out with native tree species.
